Biografie

Merijn Chamon has been a Professor of EU Law in the department since October 2023. Prior to that, he was an Associate Professor of EU Law at Maastricht University. He obtained his PhD from Ghent University in 2015.

Onderwijs

Merijn teaches in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Law, as well as in the Master after Master’s programme in International and European Law at VUB. He teaches European Law I, which covers the fundamental principles and institutional law of the European Union. In the Master’s programme in Law, Merijn teaches European Law II, which familiarises students with the law of the internal market, and EU External Relations.

Onderzoek

Merijn’s research focuses on the constitutional and institutional law of the European Union, including EU external relations law. An underlying question in much of his research is how the EU, as a post-Westphalian construct, functions in legal terms: how does decision-making take place within the EU; how can the EU ensure the proper implementation of its legislation despite not being a state and therefore not having an extensive administration; how can the EU, as an international organisation, act externally within an international legal order dominated by states; how can the EU act autonomously, both internally and externally, and how this relate to the sovereignty of its Member States.
